4.13.15

Today's poem is a "riddle" poem, where you describe something without naming it (except maybe in the title, like I did).

Insomnia

It’s a persistent knocking,
a pea under the mattress,
a silverfish darting through the mind
corner to dim corner.

It’s a sound I can’t quite hear,
an endless wooden ladder,
a ceiling fan left on all night
spinning and spinning in the dark.

It’s dive-bombing dusk barn swallows,
an Energizer bunny in the hall,
a hamster in a metal wheel
running and running towards nowhere.

It’s a security camera on a blurry loop,
the thousandth interruption,
a fast car stuck in drive,
headed to where the streetlights
finally, finally wink out.
